Bitcoin Surges 25% to Nearly $80,000 in Days: Another Bull Run or Pure Speculation?

Bitcoin price jumps to nearly ,000 with an up-trending chart; questions whether a new bull run is coming.

Bitcoin has suddenly returned to the spotlight.

After trading below US$65,000 earlier this week, Bitcoin surged roughly 25% in just a few days, reaching around US$79,000 on August 21, 2026. The move brought Bitcoin back to levels last seen in May and triggered renewed speculation that another major cryptocurrency bull run could be underway.

But is this the beginning of a new sustainable uptrendโ€”or simply another speculative rally driven by liquidity, leverage and investor excitement?

A Remarkable Move in Just Days

The speed of the rally is perhaps more significant than the absolute price level.

Bitcoin closed at approximately US$64,735 on August 18. By August 21, it had reached an intraday high of about US$79,190 before closing around US$78,306. That represents a gain of more than 20% in only three days.

Such a rapid move is characteristic of Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency can remain relatively quiet for weeks before suddenly moving thousands of dollars in a matter of days.

This time, however, there were several identifiable catalysts behind the rally.

The U.S. Treasury’s decision to at least double the maximum size of certain longer-dated Treasury buyback operations to US$4 billion was interpreted by some market participants as potentially supportive of liquidity and long-term bond prices. Analysts at Bernstein said Bitcoin has historically responded positively to liquidity expansion.

At the same time, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF flows have improved, while optimism surrounding cryptocurrency regulation has strengthened investor sentiment.

The Short Squeeze Factor

There is another important ingredient: leverage.

Bitcoin’s rally was amplified by the liquidation of bearish positions. More than US$4 billion of crypto short positions were reportedly liquidated over two days, creating additional buying pressure as traders were forced to close losing bets.

This matters because a rally caused partly by short covering can become self-reinforcing.

Bitcoin rises. Short sellers are forced to buy. Their buying pushes Bitcoin higher. Momentum traders enter the market. More short positions are liquidated.

The result can look like a fundamental change in market sentiment even when a significant portion of the initial move is simply positioning and leverage being unwound.

That does not mean the rally is necessarily unhealthy. It simply means investors should be careful about interpreting a rapid price increase as proof of a new long-term bull market.

Is Another Bull Run Coming?

There are reasons to be optimistic.

Bitcoin has recovered strongly from its recent lows, ETF demand has improved, and the regulatory environment appears more supportive. The broader cryptocurrency market has also participated, with Ethereum and other major digital assets recording substantial gains alongside Bitcoin.

Bitcoin’s institutional infrastructure is also considerably more developed than during previous cycles. Spot ETFs provide traditional investors with easier access, while major companies and financial institutions have become increasingly involved in the digital-asset ecosystem.

These developments could make the next Bitcoin cycle different from previous speculative episodes.

But there is an important warning.

Bitcoin remains highly sensitive to liquidity, interest rates, investor sentiment and leverage. A 25% rally in several days is not evidence by itself that a sustainable bull market has begun.

In fact, Bitcoin remains well below its previous record high of around US$126,000 reached in October 2025. The current rally therefore represents a substantial recovery, but not yet a return to its previous peak.

Speculation Has Not Disappeared

Bitcoin’s fundamental investment case may have evolved, but speculation remains a major part of the market.

A useful test will be what happens after the excitement fades.

Can Bitcoin hold the US$75,000โ€“US$80,000 area?

Can ETF inflows remain strong?

Can the market absorb profit-taking without another sharp reversal?

And perhaps most importantly, can Bitcoin continue rising without increasingly excessive leverage?

If the answer to these questions is yes, the current rally could eventually prove to be the early stage of a much larger move.

If Bitcoin quickly falls back toward the US$60,000โ€“US$65,000 region, however, the recent surge may look more like another spectacular speculative bounce than the beginning of a new cycle.

The Bigger Picture

For now, it is too early to declare the arrival of another Bitcoin bull market.

The rally is certainly impressive. Liquidity expectations, ETF demand, regulatory optimism and forced short covering have created a powerful combination.

But Bitcoin has always been capable of producing dramatic rallies before equally dramatic corrections.

For investors in precious metals, the comparison is particularly interesting. Gold’s appeal is traditionally associated with scarcity, monetary history and physical ownership, while Bitcoin offers a different form of scarcity through its digital protocol. Both can attract capital when confidence in conventional financial assets weakens, but their price behaviour can be very different.

Bitcoin’s jump toward US$80,000 is therefore worth watchingโ€”but perhaps not chasing blindly.

The next few weeks may tell us more than the past few days.

A new bull run may be starting. Or we may simply be witnessing Bitcoin doing what Bitcoin does best: turning market sentiment into an extraordinary price move.
